Sure, you can go to New York City for Times Square, Central Park and the Statue of Liberty. But if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind treasure hunt in this city, look for the cats.
Bodega cats are to New York what matryoshka dolls are to Russia. They’re iconic and you can’t pass one without smiling. And with more than 10,000 corner stores (aka bodegas) across NYC’s five boroughs, you’re bound to find a kitty anywhere you buy the local paper, a cold drink or a late night sandwich.
Cats in NYC corner stores aren’t exactly legal. In fact, the health department prohibits any animal other than fish or a service animal to be on the premises where food and drinks are sold. But that doesn’t mean you won’t find cats in almost every bodega of the city. And you know why? Because they kill vermin. And because how could you say no to these faces? How?
If you’re planning a visit to NYC anytime soon, take some time out to visit the local bodegas in Manhattan and the outer boroughs—if you like cats, that is.
